Comfort Zone

Comfort Zone takes perspective on interpersonal relations, drawing parallels between experiences and sidelining what differentiates our identities. The tapestry is woven with juxtaposing natural and industrial fibres and divided into three sections, legible from behind and sensorily elsewhere. The first section expresses a cry for help. Four golden characters, S-A-V-E, are encased in a bubblegum heart, signifying the inherent desire to diminish the personal responsibility of our present state through the assistance of extraneous variables. The second section shows two raised bronze hands surrendering to the change. This is a state of presence. Perhaps the days turn to weeks with your lover or you lost track of how many hours you have been dancing. The third section screams the sentiment NEVER. We conclude our pooled experiences with resolve not to repeat the same mistakes. But of course we do. This work examines the notion of life as cyclical and shared, rather than linear and personal. Investigations of the work strive for relatable storytelling through ambiguity proposing parallels in what unites us, rather than divides us.

Andy James (1993) is a multi-disciplinary artist from London. His works explore the impact of repeated exposure to media outputs. It is a practice of social consideration, with investigations into the subtleties in aesthetics around us; familiar, irreverent and absolutely present. He draws inspiration from a thematic labyrinth, cross referencing ritual, hedonism, protest and cliché. Each piece is urgent and laced with panic. He constructs with an intention to engulf, indulge and delight an audience. One might feel comfortable in the experience of flashy emptiness. If there is an invitation to explore, this is it.
